Peterhead - 'The Blue Toon'

Peterhead known locally as 'The Blue Toon' (the name dates back to the colour of the jumpers worn by the old whalers) is situated in north-east Scotland with a population of 20,000. Maritime activity has always been the basis of the prosperity & livelihood of the town.

In the town square there is a memorial statue to Field Marischal James Keith, a soldier of fortune and is an exact copy of one created of Wilhelm I of Prussia by the artist Teasart, Keith and his brother George were the last of the Keith family of Inverugie near Peterhead. Both brothers took part in the 1715 rebellion and as a consequence they and their families lost everything due to their support for the Stuart cause. The Keith's were the hereditary Earl Marshals of Scotland and controlled the North East for 700 years.

Today visitors to Peterhead can see the remnants of their castles at Ravenscraig and Inverugie, 2 miles west of the town.

In the 18th century Peterhead was one of the leading whaling ports in Britain, then into the 19th century a herring fishing port. Today Peterhead is the largest white fish port in Europe with a fleet of over 400 fishing boats. Industries such as fish processing, ship repairs and engineering have also expanded along with the fishing fleet.Engineering especially has become more important since the mid 1970's where subsequent to the discovery of oil in the north sea, the offshore service and supply industries have flourished giving much need boosts to the local community.
