The Kings Head

The Kings Head is a traditional 15th century oak beamed inn situated in the historic city of Canterbury offering a licensed bar, dining and en-suite bed & breakfast facilities. We are conveniently situated and within easy walking distance of the city centre.

Canterbury is home to the University of Kent and Kent County Cricket Club, the St Lawrence ground is approximately one and a half miles from the Kings Head.

You can be assured of a warm welcome at the Kings Head which is run by proprietors who will endeavour to ensure your complete satisfaction with fine ales, food and service.

The cosy bedrooms, which have exposed beams, are all en-suite with shower and toilet, a colour television, tea/coffee making facilities, radio alarm clocks, electric fans and hair dryers. Guests have access to their rooms at any time during the day.

The Bar

In the comfortable and relaxing bar you will find a wealth of exposed beams and a range of well kept real ales and lagers at reasonable prices. We serve Harveys Sussex Best, Greene King IPA plus a constantly changing guest beer from around the country. The Kings Head is included in the 2009 CAMRA Good Year Guide. Food is served daily until 9pm, from a bar snack and main menu which include vegetarian options. A traditional roast dinner is available Sunday lunchtimes. A number of games are available in the bar and include darts, bar billiards, chess, cards and crib. The Kings Head also plays host to a Bat & Trap team which play in the local league. This is a traditional Kentish game played outside during the summer months and is sometimes called "lazy man's cricket". Sky Sports is available in the bar.

Dining Room

You can eat in the separate no smoking dining room if desired. The cosy dining room has an open fire place.

There are two doubles and one twin room; all rooms are en-suite with WC, hand basin and electric shower. Single occupancy is also available subject to availability. All rooms have exposed beams and are tastefully furnished. Central heating is provided for your comfort. We provide you with:

Breakfast is served in the dining room between 7.30 and 9.00am Monday to Friday and between 8.00 and 9.00am on Saturday and Sunday. Early morning breakfast is available by arrangement.

Beer Garden

There is a secluded outdoor drinking area at the rear of the inn where you can relax and enjoy a drink on a summer's evening. A substantial heated covered area is also available for those cooler days. The mature garden has a grassed area which is used for the Bat & Trap pitch.

Where to Find Us

By Road - From London
From the A2/M2, follow signs for Canterbury. In the city, follow signs for A28 Ashford. Turn right at the roundabout after Habitat store, passing under the railway bridge. The Kings Head is 500 metres on the right hand side just past the Esso filling station.

By Road - from Dover
From the A2, take the exit for A28Ashford and Wincheap Park and Ride. Turn right towards the city centre, the Kings Head is 300 metres on the left hand side.

By Coach
From the City Centre bus station, follow signs for Canterbury East rail station. (Some Tourist buses set down directly at Canterbury East). Pass the station on your left, and continue to the Round House public house. Turn left again, passing under the bridge, onto Wincheap. The Kings Head is eight minutes walk on the right hand side.

By Rail
From Canterbury East, turn left then turn left again, passing under the bridge, onto Wincheap. The Kings Head is eight minutes walk on the right hand side.

From Canterbury West, go towards the city centre, and then follow signs to Canterbury East station, about 1 mile. Then follow the above directions from Canterbury East station to the Kings Head.

A taxi rank is conveniently situated outside both stations.

Parking

Restricted off road resident parking is available on a driveway by the side of the inn or in the nearby public car park situated in Cow Lane.

The Kings Head and Wincheap

The Kings Head is a 15th century inn which retains many of its original architectural features, combined with modern facilities for your comfort. Wincheap is a conservation area, with many buildings of character and historical interest. The area was used by the Romans to grow grape vines for wine making two thousand years ago. The name Wincheap is old English for "wine market".

Walking to the City Centre

From the Kings Head, walk along to the left. When you have gone under the railway bridge, cross the roundabout via the subway, and then continue straight ahead along Castle Street. This will take you to the centre of the city, less than 1 mile from the Kings Head and about 10 minutes walk.

Exploring Canterbury

The main tourist office for Canterbury and the surrounding district is in the Buttermarket, opposite the cathedral gates. As well as providing information on local attractions, you may ask the local tourist office to book future accommodation for your onward travel to any part of England or Wales.

Taxis

Taxis in Canterbury are all metered and licensed by the local authority. There are several taxi ranks around the city. Please ask if you would like us to order a taxi to collect you from the Kings Head.

Coach, Bus and Rail Links

The main pick up point for tourist buses is outside Canterbury East rail station, located very close to the Kings Head at the city wall end. Canterbury West rail station is about a mile from the Kings Head, in the St Dunstan's area of the city. Several bus services run along Wincheap, and a park and ride service to the city centre operates 300 yards from the Kings Head.

Travelling Further

Wincheap is the principal route (A28) connecting Canterbury with Ashford, for Eurostar rail services to mainland Europe. The Kings Head is only 200 metres from the A28 junction with the A2, for fifteen minutes direct drive to Dover, where there are frequent ferry connections to France. The Channel rail link for motorists is close to Folkestone; about 20 minutes drive from Canterbury. The main bus station for long distance travel and airport connections is in the Whitefriars area of the city, less than fifteen minutes walk from the Kings Head.

Local Facilities

There are ATM facilities close by. The two nearest are outside Morrison's supermarket on the retail park about 300 metres from the Kings Head, and at the Esso petrol station on Wincheap less than 50 metres from the Kings Head. Canterbury city centre has branches of all major banks and bureaux de change. Worldwide money transfer services are also available through the main post office, banks and travel bureaux in the city centre.

You may check in from 14:.00 on the day of arrival. Luggage may be left if arriving earlier. Guests must vacate their room by 10.30 on the day of departure.

Cancellations
In the event of a no show or a cancellation with less than 2 days notice prior to the date of arrival we reserve the right to charge the full cost of the booking.
