GUEST HOUSE

Smugglers Rock Country House is a stone built Georgian Country House built in approximately 1840. It was once used as a Coaching Inn and was built alongside the old coaching road between Scarborough and Whitby (now a quiet country lane leading to the beach). The house has links with smugglers which was once a flourishing business on this part of the coast. There is still, in the east wall above the cellar, a 9"x3" window from which smugglers would watch out for the constabulary and then shine a light when it was safe to bring up contraband through the tunnels from the beach.

The house has been renovated to a very high standard and has eight en-suite bedrooms. We also have a spacious open-beamed guest lounge with spectacular views and an 'olde-worlde' breakfast room with panoramic coastal and countryside views. We have a comprehensive breakfast menu including our 'Delicious Yorkshire' breakfast using local produce and our own free-range eggs. There is also off-road parking available. We hold a 4 star rating with the English Tourist Board and Associate Membership with the AA, both of which ensures a high standard of accommodation. All of our bedrooms (3 of which have 4-poster beds) have colour televisions and tea/coffee making facilities.

We are situated in the North York Moors National Park at the southern end of Robin Hood's Bay and are in an ideal position for touring the area (the historic towns of Scarborough and Whitby are 10 and 12 miles away respectively). We are within reach of York, and the village of Goathland (setting for the ITV series 'Heartbeat') is only thirty minutes away. The property stands in two acres with an adjacent 28 acres of farmland, and we pump and filter our own fresh additive-free water from a borehole on our land - we find it makes a lovely cup of tea! The winter of 2006/07 saw the installation of solar panels to heat 90% of the hot water during the season.

Smugglers Rock is ideally situated for walking and cycling - the views around the house are breathtaking, and arguably the best on the East coast. The Cleveland Way and Lyke Wake walk both run through Ravenscar, as does the dis-used Scarborough to Whitby railway line which is now a popular walk and cycle track. The newly opened 'Moors to Coast' cycle trail also passes the house.

SELF CATERING COTTAGES

We have three cottages available for holidays lets on our property. All are self contained and sleep four people (plus a cot), and are equipped with colour TV, DVD player, CD/stereo, fridge/freezer, microwave, electric cooker, kettle, toaster and coffee machine, and all are provided with patio furniture and barbecue.

We provide a welcome pack in each cottage for your arrival. Smugglers Rock and Smugglers Cove cottages allow one well behaved dog (2 out of season), by arrangement, but which must not be left unattended in the cottages. Both of these cottages have a 3 star rating with the English Tourist Board. Smugglers View cottage has a 4 star rating and is non-smoking and pets are not allowed.

There are several good pubs and restaurants in the area and several supermarkets within the nearby towns of Scarborough and Whitby. Smugglers Rock and Smugglers Cove cottages have been converted from the stable of the old inn. Smugglers View is a conversion from part of the main guesthouse, and was new for the 2003 season.

Smugglers Rock Cottage (no. 1) ***

The property comprises: ground floor - entrance vestibule with door to lounge. Lounge with staircase to first floor and door to kitchen/diner. Fully equipped kitchen/diner with door leading to shared patio/garden area and parking.First floor - two bedrooms - 1 double (can also accommodate travel cot), and one twin (2 x 2'6" beds), bathroom with 3-piece suite with shower over bath. Distance coastal views from some windows.

Smugglers Cove Cottage (no. 2) ***

The property comprises: ground floor - entrance vestibule with door to lounge. Inner hallway with wide spiral staircase to first floor and door to kitchen. Kitchen/diner with dishwasher and door leading to shared patio/garden area and parking.
First floor - two bedrooms - 1 double (can also accommodate travel cot), and one twin (2 x 2'6" beds), bathroom with 3-piece suite with shower over bath. Distant coastal views from some windows.

Smugglers View Cottage (no. 3) ****

The property comprises: ground floor - entrance from private gravelled patio area to kitchen/diner with fully fitted units, dishwasher and washer/dryer. Dining area with pine furniture and door to inner hallway. Hallway has doors leading to: double bedroom with 4-poster bed (can also accommodate travel cot), twin bedroom (2 x 2'6" beds), shower room with power shower, staircase to first floor.
First floor - stairs leading directly into lounge with stripped pine floor, wood-burning stove and spectacular views down the coast towards Flamborough Head. This cottage was new in 2003 and is furnished to a very high standard with solid pine furniture throughout. Sorry no pets or smoking allowed in this cottage. Please note that because of the design of the upstairs lounge with open staircase, care needs to be taken with the under 5's.

The weekly prices are from £229 in the winter to a maximum of £550 in the summer
