The Restaurant is built on two levels with slate pillars and huge oak beams. The gallery has recently been restored to its original form and occupies three sides of what was the old cellar, whilst the ground level was, within living memory, a ships' chandlery.

Port Isaac is an old unspoilt fishing village, on the coast of North Cornwall. The natural harbour still accommodates an active fleet of boats, and the coastline, stretching for miles either way, is an area of outstanding national beauty. It provides a perfect setting for a 'get away from it all' holiday.

The village clusters round the harbour with white-washed cottages clinging to the steep sides of the haven. Narrow ways thread down the hillside giving glimpses of colourful gardens and delightful views over the roof tops to the harbour.

In the centre of the village is the Platt, where the fishermen land their daily catch of crab and lobster. You can sit here and watch the world go by, much as it has done for generations. Port Isaac Bay is one of the most spectacular and unspoiled coastlines in the British Isles. It is best viewed from the well-maintained coastal footpath - the riot of colour from the wild flowers in Spring must be seen to be believed.

Within easy reach of Port Isaac are some of the finest beaches in Cornwall. Recreational facilities nearby include horse riding, sailing, surfing, deep-sea fishing, and other water sports. There are also some fine golf courses.

Holiday makers are well catered for in Port Isaac. All necessary provisions can be obtained in the village at the small friendly shops, and a welcome awaits you in any of the many inns, restaurants and cafes, where you may sample fresh local seafood.

Port Isaac is an excellent base for a Cornish Holiday. There are many fine National Trust properties and gardens, as well as a range of coastline or moorland walks to be found in the surrounding countryside. Sailing and windsurfing are available in the nearby Camel Estuary which is overlooked by the championship golf course at St. Enodoc. Two of the best surfing beaches in Cornwall are also within easy reach.

A short drive from Port Isaac are numerous places of scenic and historic interest including the legendary castle of King Arthur at Tintagel, Cornish antiquity in its many forms from Iron Age fortifications to Mediaeval Churches, and all the places much loved by Sir John Betjeman. There are wonderful WALKS, GARDENS and GOLF COURSES.The adjoining cove, Port Gaverne, was once busy shipping slate from the nearby quarry. Now the peaceful haven is good for sunbathing and safe swimming, with a beautiful sandy beach and rock pools to be explored.

A beautiful scenic walk leads to Port Quin, a tiny old fishing village, now deserted, but with the charm of bygone days. The old fish cellars and cottages, now restored, complement a beautiful cove, much of which is now owned by The National Trust.

Situated in the middle of KingArthur's country, the ancient village of Port Isaac is tucked away on the north coast at the mouth of a deep, steep-sided valley whose streams collect and run down into the sea throughthe cove. The harbour has offered shelter from the winds and storms of this part of the coast since time immemorial. The old name for Port Isaac, 'Pothissick' is probably derived from the Cornish word 'yssick' meaning 'corn', theplentiful trade in corn of the middle ages giving rise to the name 'Isaac'.

From the earliest times the Cornish and other settlershave done business here with traders from overseas, particularly Phoenicians, who came for tin and paid for it with their precious goods. Port Isaac also traded with other Bristol Channel, Welsh and River Severn ports, with Europe and America. Welsh and Irish Christian missionaries, many of whom were canonised, used Cornwall as a stepping stone between their native countries, Brittany and the rest of Europe. Many of them settled here instead of travelling further; set up religious cells and attempted to convert the locals.

For centuries the villagers worked hard at maritime trades including,of course, a thriving fishing industry. It was referred to as a 'fisschar' village in early documents and as a fishing village in 1340. Local fishermen and visiting vessels caught pilchards and herrings, which were processed in the village's fish cellars.

In such a remote settlement, many miles from any centres of population, the people of Port Isaac were very self-dependent and provided their own recreation. Work and life for local people was harsh. Singing, storytelling and relaxing with a mug of ale in a fierce winter in front of a blazing fire would have been very welcome pastimes.

The building that is now the Slipway Hotel dates from 1527. It was originally a place of trade and commerce, established by Warwick Guy, a successful entrepreneur who bought and sold goods in his chandlery and had dealings in the business of the port itself, taking a leading role in the import/export trade. His influence extended up the Bristol Channel and River Severn and he had contacts in Cardiff and Bristol. He also owned vessels and supplied crews for the shipping trade.

A more recent proprietor of the chandlery was Guy Hawken who was probably the last owner to carry on the chandlery trade. Like his predecessor Warwick Guy, he also owned boats. At this time the Slipway was a large airy shop with sacks of salt, coils of rope, cans of paraffin - more of a warehouse than a shop. The customers were mainly male - local tradesmen and fishermen. The little bridge over the stream below the restaurant's windows is known locally as 'Guy Hawken's Bridge'.At its inception as a hotel, in the 1930's, full board in 'The Slipway House Hotel' was seven and a half to nine guineas. It would have employed local staff in the kitchen, dining room as chambermaids, and more recently in the bar. Set in the heart of the village with the streets surrounding it and running alongside, it is, and has always been, literally 'in the thick of things'.
