Tavistock
Tavistock, an ancient stannary town, lies in a valley on the edge of the greatest wilderness in southern England. Browns of Tavistock is in the centre of a wealth of little, old fashioned shops and near the thriving pannier market with stalls full of antiques and crafts, foods and flowers. The town is unspoilt, full of charm and famous locally for its annual Goose Fair which sells cattle and poultry and includes a busy market and funfair.
Full of little terraced cottages and the remains of a once important abbey, Tavistock was once the world's major copper producing area. The nearby attraction of Morwellham Quay gives visitors the opportunity to experience a Victorian copper mine and community in operation.
Sir Francis Drake, born in Tavistock, is remembered by a large bronze statue which you pass when entering the town. Lydford Gorge, only a few miles away, provides breathtaking scenery and spectacular walks.
With its underground canal, shopping centre and parks to roam in, Tavistock is full of interest. There are extensive leisure facilities which provide golf, swimming, horse riding, tennis and much more.
