Places of local interest

World famous for its stunning scenery, the Dartmoor National Park is best known for its rocky outcrops, woodlands and wild open stretches of moorland.

With over 200 granite tors to visit you are spoilt for choice. Especially popular is Hound Tor at Grimspound - the setting for Arthur Conan Doyle's 'Hound of the Baskervilles'.

The Bedford Hotel, Tavistock, Dartmoor National Park

Don't miss the famous Bowerman's nose. According to legend, Bowerman the Hunter angered the witches of Dartmoor by driving his pack through one of their secret coverns. They were so outraged that, in their fury, they turned him and his hounds (the boulders surrounding the rock) into stone.

Just a short trip from the hotel will take you to any one of hundreds of beauty spots and places of interest
  • Buckland Abbey - home to Sir Francis Drake
  • Widecombe-in-the-Moor (of Uncle Tom Cobley fame)
  • The stunning Becky Falls
  • Buckfast Abbey - a living Benedictine Monastery
  • The infamous Dartmoor prison
Within easy reach of the hotel are the coastal resorts of South Devon.
Torquay, Paignton and Brixham (better know as the English Riviera) are famous for their exotic plants as well as their long sandy beaches.

Further along the coast is the South Devon Hams - explore the lovely towns of Dartmouth, Totnes, Salcombe and Kingsbridge all with many interesting shops and historical sights.

No visit to the area would be complete without a trip to Plymouth, the commercial centre of West Devon.
You must see the Hoe where Drake first sighted the Spanish Armada whilst he played bowls and where the Mayflower sailed for New England with the Pilgrim Fathers.

Location

The Bedford Hotel is situated in Plymouth Road, just off Bedford Square, in the centre of Tavistock. Tavistock is on the A386, about 20 miles north of Plymouth and on the western edge of Dartmoor, in west Devon.
